If you are in a suicide crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Tip of the Day

Depression is not self-pity.

You may think you're wallowing in self-pity about your life circumstances. It's quite possible, probable even, that you're battling depression.

Tip of the Day

On the morning of September 11, 2001, as the terrorist attacks on the United States were ongoing, a co-worker despondently said “It's a horrible world.”

I responded instinctively, “It's a wonderful world. This is a horrible thing.”

Sometimes when you're depressed it's really, really hard to believe that the world is a good place, especially when terrible things happen, especially in the age of COVID-19.

You need to decide to not let distress or genuine sadness become intractable depression. For your own health and safety, turn off the TV, get some exercise and fresh air (take a walk), meditate, love on your grand-kids.

Life is beautiful. Drink it in! At least for a little while today, love life.

Tip of the Day

Show compassion for yourself. Self-pity doesn’t look like you think it does.

“If she were really feeling pity for herself, she would ditch the self-loathing and wrap herself in compassion and caring.

“She would cry healing tears of grief, instead of fruitless tears of recrimination and shame.”

Replace pity with compassion and assert your worthiness to feel good.

Tip of the Day

Sadness and depression are different.

I was sad when my cat died. I missed her and her light going out was sad.

Depression is that for months I was overwhelmed with the belief that her death was my fault because I was not good enough.

Allow yourself to feel sadness, grief, loss and disappointment.

But try to keep blame and self-flagellation and self-hatred at bay.

Tip of the Day

Get help/Give help.

Lifeline Crisis Centers are primarily funded on the state and local level. Some states lack resources to answer calls locally, causing national back-up centers to answer approximately 30% of all calls. This leads to longer wait times and fewer links to the best local care in those states.

But you can help. Contact your local Lifeline crisis center and find out how you can volunteer or donate to support their life-saving work.

You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to be connected to local resources.

Tip of the Day

There is a study showing kiwi fruit combats or prevents depression. One study means almost nothing, of course. However, kiwis are high in Vitamin C and in fiber, both nice anti-depressant ingredients.

So, try regularly adding kiwis to your diet.

Besides, they're so cute!

If you are a woman of a certain age, listen-up! According to a study from the Columbia University Medical Center:

“A diet high in refined carbohydrates may lead to an increased risk for new-onset depression in postmenopausal women, according to a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Well, isn't that special?

Tip of the Day

“Moonrise on the lake? I spent this night shivering and laughing under a clear, cold sky full of stars with people I love just to witness something beautiful. We mooned the moon and laughed ourselves hoarse, and I'm so incredibly grateful for every silly second. I came to a realization this year that I feel compelled to share here, for whomsoever may need it: Avoiding fear, sadness or anger is not the same thing as being happy. I live my sadness every day, but I don't resent it anymore. Instead, I do it now so that the wonderful moments of joy I do find are not in order to forget, but to inhabit and enjoy for their own sake. It's not easy. In fact, I'd say it takes much more effort to consciously do than it does to just stay sad, but with all my heart, I cannot tell you how worth it it is. And for those suffering from depression, I know how dark and endless that tunnel can feel, but if happiness seems impossible to find, please hold on to the possibility of hope, faint though it may be. Because I promise you, there're enough nights under the same yellow moon for all of us to share, no matter how or when you find your way there.”
